Alabama Studio Style by Natalie Chanin

Roger and I escaped to the bookstore one of these freezing cold days. After all, that’s how we met – our mutual love for books and warmth! We take turns watching the little guy run wild over the Thomas the Train table. I brought a stack of the newest sewing books back to sit down [...]

A Book Cover Painting!

BookCover_InfluenzaI am so excited about this book cover! It’s the first cover I’ve ever done and it’s for an unbelievably fascinating subject! The title of the book is: Development of an Influenza Virus Vaccine using the Baculovirus-Insect Cell Expression System. The author is Manon Cox of Protein Sciences. I can’t believe the amazing leap she [...]

Yo-Yo Ma in Songs of Joy and Peace

The music is simply gorgeous.

I’ve become addicted in the past few months to Yo-Yo Ma’s playing and to his selections and interpretations. I love how random his choice can be. They all flow together and all are beautiful, but they range from heartaching to foot tapping in the same cd.

Free Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy

IMG_5848Ok, this book by the “World’s Worst Mom” is a must read for any parent. Seriously. Especially if you need to laugh a lot!

It’s by the mother who let her 9 year old ride the NY subway. Alone.

Swan for the Money by Donna Andrews

Oh, I love Donna Andrews books. I pretty much count down the last days until the new one comes out. Then I plan a day all to myself to read it. It’s not like I’ll pay attention to anything else when I’m engrossed in it. The plots are decent, nicely done, but not super puzzling. [...]

What’s Going On In There? by Lise Eliot

A detailed look at the mechanics behind your baby’s brain. Written by a neurobiologist and mother, it’s a look into children’s brains based on what she found interesting. I have several issues with this book: Ok, personally I have a problem with unnecessary destructive animal testing. This is a personal issue. I believe very strongly [...]

The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World by Michael Pollan

Apples, tulips, marijuana and potatoes… The premise is that plants manipulate us to increase their species. Interesting thought, but that’s about it. More interesting is the history of humans and these 4 plants. Johnny Appleseed as you’ve never heard about him, potatoes as the fasttrack to the devil. Tulip obsessions… Also, slightly out of date, [...]

Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks

A typical Sacks’s book with a lot of stories about his patients and interesting tidbits. You learn a little without being bored. It drags a little toward the end, but by then you’ve gotten most of the interesting facts out of it.

Jack Johnson – Curious George Soundtrack

Ok, the Curious George movie is good. The books are much better. Absolutely Edwin’s favorites, points to George and says “Ggge.” They’re a bit like Where’s Waldo for the 1 year old. But if you have kids, you absolutely must get this soundtrack if you don’t have it already. It’s good music – for kids. [...]

Salt by Mark Kurlansky

Surprisingly this is one of my favorite books of all time. Salt. I hardly ever even use table salt and I found it fascinating. It’s a completely salt-centric history of the world. It’s absolutely amazing to see how precious salt was, ie: salary, etc. How many words salt contributed which are completely outside the modern [...]
