Fleece Scarf and Hat
This fleece hat and scarf takes about half an hour to do, or an hour if you do a matching set for daddy too.
Fleece is incredibly easy to sew since it doesn’t fray. You just put one piece of fabric on top of the other and sew.
Materials
1 Yard each of 2 colors of fleece
Matching thread
Nice bright colors! No teams in mind, just bright colors I can see when he tries to wander the woods.
Helping more. Measure the head around with the measuring tape when you can catch him.
He likes the tape but not being measured. Next you cut some triangles out.
The bottom of the triangle is one fourth your head circumference + 1 inch.
The pointy end is the length you want the hat to be + 1 inch. For instance, I wanted the whole wizard’s cap effect with Edwin’s, but Roger would have balked at that so his is proportionately shorter.
Overlap the fabric and sew. I used a straight stitch then went over it with a broad stitch (#53 on my machine). Stitches are near impossible to remove so WYSIWYG. You are stitching on the RIGHT side of the fabric.
I did do one seam from the wrong side connecting the final side of the triangles.
Now try the hat on and adjust for fit.

Yes, I know there’s something on his face. Probably chocolate since daddy’s taking care of him…
Now, if you can grab the hat back,
Sew the base band on. This one is Roger’s hat since I did have a struggle getting Edwin’s back. I just sewed it down. The ones you’re supposed to roll up never do so neatly, I think. Just make sure that next to the head is one piece and smooth.
Cut some of the scraps into strips and sew them together. Make them a little long so you can trim them on the hat.
Turn the hat inside out and sew the strips into the hat.
Topstitch with a wide stitch.
Do a final trim around the band to make it smooth.
Very proud boy!
Now the scarf…
Using your handy measuring tape on your child, find an ideal length. I went a lot too long at 48″ inches so he could wear it 2 years. Divide this by 2 and cut out 2 different colors of fleece. My measurements were 8″ x 24″ each.
Sew these together, overlapping in the middle.
Cut 2 4″ x 8″, one of each color. Sew these at the end, matching the ends.
This way you have both colors.
Complete happiness wrapped in a scarf!
