Sketching Isle of Hope, Georgia

2018-08-04

Sultry summers with Spanish moss streaming in the ocean breeze and white picket fences encircling big rocking chair porches are what I think of Isle of Hope, Georgia. Along the waterfront are some of the most beautiful houses I've ever seen, each a Southern architecture jewel. There's just something about the deep porches with haint blue ceilings that makes me want to sit and sketch awhile.

I love walking down the street, just taking in the beautiful houses. Eventually, I choose one to sketch and paint awhile. Every house is worth painting. I expect I'll be back to paint them all over my lifetime.

Something about this area lends a slow timelessness to simple things, like sitting and painting. The houses, the salt marshes all have the changeless quality. They've been like this my entire life. They will ebb and flow like the tide a little, but the essentials remain the same, despite the weather and the outside world.

I hope you sketch a little on a street like this near you this week.
