Sancutary Floor, Basilica dei Santi Maria e D
Murano, Italy

This amazing floor of Murano's large basilica is dated from 1140. Intricate mosaics cover the floor, each one different. It almost looks as if different groups of artists were assigned areas of floor, all creating their best works of art for the grand church. Bits of Murano glass are incorporated into the mosaics, glimmering in the deep shadows. To me, the most moving part is the wear patterns in the stone floor from centuries of worshipers.
